My first school is called Shree Mangal Dvip Boarding School (SMD) in Kathmandu. It is one of the best private schools in Nepal. SMD is a non profit institution for the education of Himalayan children who would otherwise have no access to learning. Every student in SMD has a sponsor because the student's family cannot afford the fees. That school is my second home. I lived in that school for 11 years as a boarding student and had different sponsors supporting me.
When I was at SMD besides my academics, I participated in different extracurricular activities and was on school teams for basketball and soccer. Our soccer team won the All Nepal Football Association Cup (ANFA) in 2008. I was the SMD sports captain for a year, organizing the schedules and managing the equipment for five hundred children. I was elected as school captain leading assemblies and checking uniforms, and hostel captain making sure that students were on time and controlling their behavior. I was the leader of the Eco Club that looks after the community environment and the school garden. I also became one of the executive members for Student Council. I volunteered two years’ service in the school clinic and got first aid training from the Nepal Red Cross Society. I also won the Thrangu Excellence Award (the top award at SMD for high academic achievement, athletics, and leadership) in 2006.
After graduating I took a gap year to give service to SMD School. During the gap year I volunteered at school. I was teacher’s assistant in class, assistant in school director’s office, coached Basketball to girls, worked in the school store room and taught science to grade 4 students in Pawo Monastery. I learned to cook and lived more independent life during my gap year. These are some of the most remarkable experiences I had at SMD besides my studies.
